The 1st Annual S.H.A.U.N. Foundation for Girls 80’s Theme Bowling Party was so much fun! I’m so grateful to everyone who came out in their neon, adidas, gold chains, and leg warmers to support our mission to empower underserved and underrepresented girls and young women! 🎳
The Power of Women and Girls! I had the pleasure of meeting this powerhouse - Thuso Mbedu of The Woman King at the Girl Up #GenRisingGenThriving event in LA. I’m so proud to be on the Advisory Board of Girl Up, the amazing organization of girl leaders who are not only rising to the challenges of the gender justice movement but, who are also thriving as kind & thoughtful global citizens. Thuso was our special guest and interviewed by our girl leader Amy about how we can continue to put gender justice in the forefront of our activism. The event was held at the beautiful Blackbird House with owner Bridgid Coulter. It was such a wonderful evening of education, advocacy and community-building. You can help pave the way for a more equitable future by supporting Girl Up!
Hi there! Some exciting news to share with you! As you know, the S.H.A.U.N. Foundation for Girls finds these amazing nonprofits around the country and we give them grants to continue their mission and share the spotlight on how the my are empowering underserved and underrepresented girls and young women. Well, we have a new grantee! (Drum roll!) It’s called, Black Girls Film Camp! It’s an incredible nonprofit that provides a safe space for high school girls to direct and develop their own short films. The girls attend workshops and film festivals, receive free equipment and software and get to talk to award-winning filmmakers! They are incredible! Congratulations to Black Girls Film Camp on being a S.H.A.U.N. Foundation for Girls grantee! Keep shining because when you empower a girl, she WILL change the world!
Happy Birthday, Quincy Jones! 🎉 It has been such a wonderful honor to have known you over the years! Every time I’ve seen you, you have brought a BIG smile to my face! ❤️ This first picture is from the ‘In A Perfect World’ event. Now, this SECOND pic! Wow, when I found this one! I’m trying to remember where this #tb took place! It was at a conference and I was lucky enough to get a picture with you and then-Virginia Governor Doug Wilder. But, you are still as handsome as ever! ❤️ Have a blessed 90th Birthday, Q!
Many of you know that I’m a very proud graduate of Spelman College. I had the honor of meeting the new president of Spelman ~ Dr. Helene D. Gayle. 🏫 Dr. Gayle is the 11th President in Spelman’s 142-year history. She is an MD, MPH, Scholar, HIV and public health researcher, humanitarian and champion of the rights of women and girls worldwide. She trained as a pediatrician, previously served in prominent positions at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and CARE Inc., as well as president and CEO of the Chicago Community Trust. Congratulations Dr. Gayle! Our beloved #SpelmanCollege is in good hands! 💙
On the red carpet at the AMG Oscar Gala. Such a wonderful night! 🖤
Celebrating female creatives! I am currently executive producing my 5th movie for Lifetime and I was so excited to commune and break bread with some of the other amazing women who are also in the #Lifetime Family. It was such a beautiful evening in the Hollywood Hills where we showed each other so much love and support. ❤️ These are women truly changing the game in Hollywood!
If you’re ever in Detroit, stop by the WGPR Museum: Telling Our Story and you will see this exhibit…That’s me on my very first talk show! “Strictly Speaking”. 🎤 It’s so cool seeing this video. I remember when we created that show. Even though we were a smaller station in the Detroit market, we made such a great impact with the show because we were covering issues of interest to the black community. Our stories have always mattered.
It was such an honor being featured on Nightline and talking about starting my journalism career in my hometown Detroit at WGPR - the first black-owned and operated television station in the country. It’s been YEARS since I’ve seen my former colleagues- Joe Spencer, (former station manager) Denise James and Terry Owens (both former anchors/reporters). WGPR-TV - the original location now turned into the WGPR Museum launched the careers of so many in an industry that had limited opportunities for African Americans at the time. Thank you Alex Perez for really capturing the essence of what it was like being part of a history-making television station. Mom came with me to the interview and loved hearing the stories. If you are ever in Detroit, make sure you try to stop by the WGPR Museum to see all of the incredible history on display!
If you have ever belonged to a church for years and then had the leader of that church retire, then you know the emotions I feel. I count myself among the thousands of people around the world who have been blessed by the ministry of Bishop Kenneth C. Ulmer of Faithful Central Bible Church in Inglewood, California. After over 40 years as Senior Pastor, Bishop is starting a new chapter with his wife of 45 years, our amazing First Lady Togetta Ulmer. (2nd pic, middle) Words cannot express how much I love and adore the both of them. They have been a true blessing in my life and I will miss them so much. 💜There have been so many events leading up to this day and last night was a celebration that we will always remember. I was touched to be part of the tribute and to share my thoughts about what makes Bishop and Lady Tee so special. (My sister-in-law Carolyn (on right) flew in from Atlanta to attend with me). Congratulations to you, Bishop on over 4 decades of doing God’s work and I’m so excited to see where He takes you next. And congratulations to our Pastor JP Foster (2nd right) on your new role as the head of the amazing #FCBC and to your beautiful wife, Karmen (2nd pic, left). May God bless you and may He bless others through you. 🙏🏾 Always.
Celebrating the amazing Togetta Ulmer who has been the First Lady of Faithful Central Bible Church for 40 years. ❤️ As her husband, Bishop Kenneth C. Ulmer prepares to retire, last night’s “A Night with Lady Tee” honored the woman who has been by his side and represented #FCBC with such grace, intelligence, poise and sophistication. The attire: White & Bling. 🤍💎 My sister-in-law Carolyn joined me for the celebration. 💕 I adore you Togetta. I have been so blessed to have your friendship. We will all miss seeing you every Sunday in church but we are excited for you and Bishop’s new chapter!
