In celebration of Mary J Blige’s new documentary #MJBMyLife, I’m posting this fun throwback of an interview I did with her at the Essence Music Festival. I’ve always loved Mary J Blige - her authenticity, her kindness to me whenever I interviewed her, her tenacity. After all these years, this Queen is still at the top of her game! Congratulations MJB!
Hey Dad! Happy Father’s Day! 💙 I really hit the jackpot with you! I feel your love - and your kisses - every single day. I know you are looking down from Heaven so proud of your little girl. I feel your protection, guidance and wisdom every moment. The message on your voicemail - “Be Happy” - softly rings in my ears and I will always strive for that. God truly blessed me with you. I love you, I love you, I love you. My Angel. 🙏🏾
There are huge disparities that exist for black and brown communities when it comes to cancer care. Today, I hosted the ‘Close the Gap’ virtual conference focusing on eradicating racial biases and helping minorities take control of their health. @SurvivorNetTeam @nyulangone #PerlmutterCancerCente
This is my little sister Jewel La’Nai. 💞I remember, before she was born, Dad asked me to help him and my step-mom name her. They had just been told they were having a girl. Dad, whose own middle name was “Jewel” said they were giving her that as a first name but, they still needed a middle name for the baby. So, I took out a pencil and piece of paper and Dad and I sat at the dining room table writing down different names. Dad was throwing out all kinds of names that I just didn’t think flowed with “Jewel”. So, I said, “What about “Jewel La-NAY”? Dad said, “Yaaaaah” in his cool voice. I said, “Let’s spell it La’Nai” (Cuz, we always have to change it up.) And that’s how my little sister was named. Dad, we miss you so much and we know you are looking down proud of your little girls. ❤️🙏🏾

With you, Mom, EVERY day is Mother’s Day! 💐 Seriously, we FaceTime each other, like, what, 4 times a day?! Yes, Mother’s Day is the “official” day set aside for moms but, for you and me, we know time is so precious because we have lived in different states for most of my adult life. We know that a mother/daughter bond is so special - we laugh, we argue and then laugh again. Thank you for being my biggest supporter. Love you to the moon and back! See you on FaceTime - for the 3rd time today - in about 5 minutes! 💝💜💘💚💞
At my desk at work in my early reporting days. Reporter/Anchor #WGPR-TV 62 #Detroit My dream was to become the best journalist I could be and to help people through telling their stories to the television audience. It’s been a long journey and I wouldn’t trade the lessons I’ve learned and the people who shared their life stories with me for anything in the world.
I finally had a chance to finish this project that I have been working on for a while. One of the first organizations that my foundation - the SHAUN Foundation for Girls - gave a grant to was an amazing nonprofit called Alternatives For Girls in my hometown Detroit. They help rescue girls and women who are victims of sex trafficking. Upon arrival into the shelter, AFG gives the women, what’s called “Survival Kits” filled with everyday essentials - things that you and I would take for granted. So, with the help of my girl Debra Langford, we filled these S.H.A.U.N. Foundation for Girls backpacks with items like a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, lotion, sanitary pads, masks, wipes, pen/notebook, footies, deodorant, a blanket, etc. I shipped them all off to AFG and can’t wait until the women and girls receive them. There are so many people struggling right now and we all can do our part to add a little sunshine into someone else’s life. 💜 p.s. If you know of a business that may help us provide more “Survival Kit” items, please tag in the comments below!
In honor of today’s Oscars, here is a flashback of the night I hosted the Official Academy Awards Pre-Show.
Throwback Sunday: I woke up this morning to a text from Mom. She sent me this picture of the two of us all brightly decked out in our colorful suits. 💚❤️I believe we were at our church in Detroit. Always love getting these pics from Mom. She’s got boxes and boxes of pictures and she will often snap pics-of-the-pics and text them to me.
